Description
Comprehensive library system built in layered architecture with ASP.NET Core 8 MVC, Entity Framework Core, and SQL Server.
Automates loan tracking, calculates overdue fines according to configurable rules, manages priority waitlists for checked-out books, and provides librarian analytics.
- Layered architecture (Domain, Data, Services, Web UI) with native .NET DI.
- Automated late fine calculation and priority book reservation queues.
- User authentication and security via ASP.NET Core Identity.
Behind the project
Challenges
- Automating overdue-fine calculation against a configurable rule set.
- Managing a reservation queue for unavailable books without complicating the user experience.
Trade-offs
- A layered architecture (Domain, Data, Services, Web UI) chosen for maintainability, at the cost of more files than a quick monolithic MVC.
- ASP.NET Core Identity over a hand-rolled auth system — more upfront setup for real security.
Lessons learned
- Layered design pays for itself as soon as a system has several business rules evolving independently (fines, reservations, roles).
